SHB warns of fraudulent tricks, impersonating Government agencies, General Department of Taxation to appropriate assets

27-07-2023

agencies, the General Department of Taxation with the purpose of stealing personal information, banking transaction information in the phone, from there. appropriating money in the account is on an increasing trend.

Scam tricks that subjects often use are as follows:

  • Impersonating a public official to call or contact people by phone, Zalo, Facebook, etc., invite the victim to the tax office or the police office for electronic identification, tax authorization, etc.
  • After that, the subject navigated and persuaded people to download fake apps from Government agencies and the General Department of Taxation through websites and links disguised as app stores such as Play Store (Android) and App Store. (IOS operating system).
  • These fake websites often attach the Government Logo, fake the “Install” button to redirect to another link and download the file with the malicious “.apk” extension.

  • Next, the subject instructs the victim to install the App and accept all permissions such as: Data access rights; permission to take screenshots; permission to read messages; Accessibility permission to control the phone remotely… for the App to work.
  • The installation of fake Apps puts people at risk of having important personal information stolen such as: Security information stored on the phone; Information when operating on the phone; Authentication code information when banking transactions are sent to the phone (OTP/Smart OTP). Fraudsters can use this information to appropriate money on a bank account .

Therefore, to ensure the safety of customers’ assets, SHB recommends:

  • Only install applications on reputable application stores (CH Play / App Store) when there is a need. Do not install applications of unknown origin via links or files with the extension “.apk”. Do not jailbreak (root, jailbreak) the phone. Only grant sufficient permissions for applications, absolutely do not grant permission to view the screen, view input data and control the phone screen.
  • Call the Tax Departments or the local police to verify the information.
  • Increasing the use of biometric methods (fingerprint, FaceID…) to log in to Banking applications and other payment applications.
  • Report to the local police when suspecting fraud and contact SHB (hotline *6688 or go to the nearest transaction point) to report and get support to lock the service.

SHB sincerely thanks customers for always trusting and accompanying the Bank during the past time!
